Winyah

The Under 1M Spotlight for this week is an awesome band I found on TikTok called Winyah. Winyah is an indie rock band of five guys. They make casual looking content typically huddled around a drum kit with their instruments. They have a really cool and fun vibe similar to the popular band The Backseat Lovers, which drew my ear to them in the first place. If you love The Backseat Lovers, I strongly encourage you to check out Winyah ASAP.

Their most popular song “Lot To Learn” begins with faint sounds of cicadas and crickets in the background giving us the impression that they’re recording outdoors. The electric guitars come in with short riffy tones and sharp piano notes. The lead singer has a super satisfying raspy tone that made me believe these guys have some character. The lyrics tell a story of a girl from his hometown. This girl has big dreams and isn’t quite settled yet. All she knows is she wants a huge change. She is looking for sources of happiness that radiate comfort and wants to take life in and stop going so fast. It’s clear that she’s looking for love as well. One of my favorite lines read “She’ll keep dreaming about the one, he’s a planet not a sun.” I love this line because it reminds us that love is important to keep in mind, but boys should never outshine individuality or self worth. 

The second verse brings in an appreciation for nature. It promotes a positive outlook on life and what’s in front of you. They are sending a message to live out each day at your fullest. It’s a light hearted and catchy way to remind people of what they have and love the people they’re surrounded by. The guitar solo in the outro gives a refreshing feel of freedom and youth that people need to be reminded of.
