The Under 1M Spotlight for this week is West 22nd. West 22nd is an indie rock band and they are right in the middle of a tour now! If you know them at all it’s probably for their beachy single “Sunburns” that was released in 2023. Aside from this, they released their album “Nowhere To Be” last April, and this one is a really great piece to listen to on a roadtrip or in the afternoon on your porch to watch a sunset. Such character and depth to their sound.
Top of their chart though is “Sunburns,” which is a casual tune with an overall message of a little nervousness and fear about coming home after a long time. The lead singer seems to be awaiting the reunion of him and a love interest. He worries if everything will feel the same between them. To remember the good times he says “Your sunburns never seem to fade away,” signifying that the times they had together will never erase. He swears to stay out in the sun forever because that’s where their relationship hit its peak and they were happiest together. He swears to fight for them and is praying she wants the same. The bridge comes in with a heavier tone as the clouds and winter start to roll in threatening their happy honeymoon relationship but still claims “I’ll be there for you.” A last repetition of the chorus represents the everlasting connection he hopes to have with her and even when it is physically cold he will be thinking of their good memories from the sun.
Overall, I believe that West 22nd has great potential to be big. Go give them a listen!!!
