Another Single Spotlight for this week is Kevin Jonas’s new debut single “Changing.” For years and years Kevin has been playing the backup role for his brothers Joe and Nick and this single is his dabble inside a solo career. Through all the different phases of Jonas, Kevin has never stepped outside his comfort zone to do something of his own and now we finally get to see him fully as a confident individual. I am pleasantly surprised by this song and I cannot wait to hear more of just Kevin.
The single is simple and comes in with a steady drum beat. Kevin’s voice is confident and strong. The lyrics aren’t too difficult to understand. It seems that Kevin values change and self growth in himself in a world where everything is routine. He puts emphasis on “familiar faces” and things that never leave us like the “same old conversations.” In a way, it seems like he does not mind when things around him don’t change. He enjoys his life, but in order to go on, he makes sure he has internal changes in his thoughts and the things he does for himself. The next verse is a view of his kids that sit in the living room of his home watching the same television shows and they are always fascinated by them. He sees television as something that tricks us into hypnosis and consumption of the same things over and over again. He doesn’t mind his kids finding joy in that, but for himself he sees past this and takes it as an opportunity to grow and change. The outro of the song is a real display of Kevin’s vocal abilities, going a few octaves higher. He screams out the words “Forever/ Forever/ Whatever” showing his desperate need to climb higher with his thoughts and outlooks on life. It seems that the release of this song is his way of “Changing” and trying something new to push himself. This all tells us that being uncomfortable is a feeling we need to feel in order to move forward. Let’s go Kev!!!
