The Single Spotlight for this week is “Changes” by Charlie Puth! Charlie Puth has been a creative mentor of mine for quite some time now. He is so particular yet carefree with the way he makes music and his social media presence is so inspiring for young people that are just starting out. Aside from this single, his fourth studio album “Whatever’s Clever” is rumored to drop in 2026. With that being said, let’s focus on what we have for now.
“Changes” opens up with some light keyboard chord hits. He pulls us in with the lyric “Lately there’s been something in the air” revealing to us that he is going through some sort of revelation in his life. He refers to a time where he used to not be afraid to talk about things that hold him down, but today he does not want to show weakness. The drums into the chorus is a fun way to tell us that he is frightened by the way life has changed and his yearn for people that he has grown apart from. He wishes that when he was close with these people, he said the things he was feeling. The keyboard solo after the chorus gives off a sense of innocence in the tone of the song. The bridge conveys the same message in a more accepting way. He does not blame anyone for the changes he feels in his relationships and personality. The chorus comes back around one more time as the outro of the song this time accompanied by a chorus chanting in the background to further emphasis the message.
