the mood swings

Our Under 1M Spotlight for this week is the band the mood swings! The band is made up of six guys that focuses on soul and funk music. Their latest EP came out this past May called “Crowded Room.” Most recently they have released their new Christmas single “Christmas Bummer.”

“Christmas Bummer” goes against the typical Christmas feel. The slow and swingy music opens up with some cool horns. The lyrics reminisce on a holiday season where two people used to spend so much quality time but that was quickly ripped away. The lead singer tells us that this company used to make Christmas time his favorite season, but once she left, Christmas became a sad reminder that he is alone. He refers to later Christmases after this time, exhibiting his loneliness and yearn to be in love again. The harmonies that reside in the background of the chorus give us that old school doo wop feel that the mood swings love to use. The little break as a quiet little recovery time followed by a crash of music into the last chorus also displays that type of feel. The vocal range at the end of the song is pleasing to the ear and gives us that soulful feeling where you can really understand his holiday sorrow.

If you liked “Christmas Bummer,” the mood swings have a bunch of similar songs. My favorites include, “Long Haired Woman” and “Sophia.”
