Aperture – Harry Styles

Ever since the release of the mysterious “We Belong Together” video on youtube, fans have been waiting on the edge of their seats for an update on where our beloved Harry Styles may be. Well, he recently answered this question with the release date of March 6th for his new album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. Fans across the globe are freaking out about this news and since Harry loves to give us a good heart attack once in a while, he released a single “Aperture” from the new album on January 22nd. A new style is released along with this single and I cannot wait to dive in.

The synthy techno keyboard and beats walk us into a distorted vocal. The first intro set of lyrics reveal to us that Harry is searching for a sense of freedom. In order to find this feeling, he may have to “Go on clean.” Saying that he has no “more tricks up my sleeve” tells us that he wants to have no more excuses. The line “Game called, Review the player” tells us that he wants to look internally to discover what the issue in his life is. He knows this will be tough but he is committed. The pre-chorus is a string of lines that are essentially saying in order to discover new parts of life and truly be free, you must lay out all parts of yourself on the floor and take a long hard look at everything. “Aperture lets the light in” encourages us to open the lens on life and see the good. The chorus repetition of the phrase “We belong together” reiterates the themes of the mysterious youtube video in that human souls are bound to be together and life is nothing without people to bond and share with. The line “It finally appears it’s only love” is a simplistic way of saying that the answers to life are all related to love and devotion to others. The second verse shuts down questions of life and encourages freedom through a party setting but the interesting part about this idea is that it is only a small touch on it. The thought gets cut kind of short as we head back into the pre-chorus and chorus. The bridge is a repetition of two lines that are a promise from Harry. He promises not to run away or waste time in life even if he is faced with unfamiliar and uncomfortable situations. He vows to go after happiness and find his meaning in life. The beats at the outro portion of the track represent a fading thought and a bit of closure.
