The Gringos

The Under 1M Spotlight for this week are the very talented Gringos!! This band is made up of five guys out of Athens, Georgia. They are currently on the road for their US tour: “For From Georgia.” Right now, they have about 90k monthly listeners on Spotify and a huge Instagram following. They give a Backseat Lovers feel which makes great music to open my sunroof to. While they have yet to put out a full album, they released their new single “Begonias” today which is a complete smash.

A quiet power chord pluck opens up a classic story of leaving a toxic relationship behind. The raspy lead tells this tale of the girl that left all her shit behind and an argument that ended in flames. The constant circle of believing “this time it’s different” is proven wrong once again. Facing the truth that this girl is just a hater happens to be the hard truth we listen to throughout the track. He expresses how much he loves “those flowers” and contrasts by saying that she “hates the way I sing.” The pre-chorus has a super catchy ring in the lyric “Stick around or pack it up/Act like I give a fuck/ Cry now or never do/ Act like it gets to you” The genuinely tired sounding rasp takes us through the repetitive feeling of a relationship that is always failing. He is implying that even though sometimes she reacts by crying, there is no possible way she actually cares about the relationship. It’s clear she only loves the back and forth of the game and not actually him. The next verse brings about a feeling of reflection. He says “I guess I’ll do better next time” kind of throwing his hands up and expressing a tone of resentment towards her. He clearly feels like they are much better apart. Admitting that he never liked her paintings or the music she plays in the car. The guitar solo break in between the verse and the bridge is a cry out to express the irritation that comes from the back and forth and finally the release from this horrendous relationship. The bridge conveys to us that he wishes her the best but not really because he will not miss her at all. Repeated over and over again through the outro to instill it in both their brains that it is over and neither party gives a fuck.

Go give The Gringos a listen before the rest of the world discovers them!
