Caleb Dee is a young artist that reminds me so much of an early 2000s alternative rock band. His music is solo but has so much character. He has around 7,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and has just gained another! Today he released a brand new single called “Light Above.” Perfect timing Caleb, we’ve got a review coming your way.
“Light Above” starts off with a super clean synthesizer note and an electric guitar lick that makes me feel like I’m living inside a little teen grunge high school movie. The first verse presents a few finger pointing lyrics at a potential love interest that disagrees with him about religion. He tells us that she does not believe in god but he is “running up to the cross, to hang myself up.” This reveals that he is super religious and that he doesn’t believe in sciency stuff but she does. But, in saying that he will “carry the weight” he wants to carry the religious end of things for both of them and doesn’t mind that they have separate beliefs. He encourages her to leave the window open for him at night which tells me that he is asking her to always give him a chance and wait for him. If it so happens that she really doesn’t think things can work out between them, he promises to “flip the switch” and do his best to stay out of her life. The techno breaks in between the choruses and verse give us that “semi-charmed kind of life” feel from Third Eye Blind. The next verse is a scene set in an airport where they are having more disagreements. Nevertheless, he promises to be there for her as long as wants him around. Although he wants to be a good guy for her, he vocalizes that it is not good for either of them to lie to themselves and stay together. The two repetitions of the chorus in the outro show the motions of which the two fight but still stay together. The faint question of “Are you still out there?” shows us that Caleb nor his audience has clarity on the situation. The abrupt ending leaves on the edge wondering what ever happened to this couple? Maybe one day we’ll find out! Good stuff Caleb!
