Olivia Rodrigo has returned, and we’ve been gifted a new single to prove it. On April 17, Olivia dropped “Drop Dead,” the first release from her newly announced album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. After two years of silence following GUTS (Spilled), she is so back, and this time she doesn’t seem heartbroken anymore, or at least that’s what it feels like so far. It’s interesting trying to figure out where this album is headed, especially knowing now that “Drop Dead” was actually written around two years ago, meaning the song most likely centers around her relationship with Louis Partridge rather than anyone more recent.
“Drop Dead” opens with an arcade-like synth beat and a scene of two people sharing a drink. She’s immediately taken by him, comparing the feeling to something almost heavenly, and walks us through discovering this person. She admires his looks and leans into the physical chemistry between them, but frames it as overwhelming, especially with the line “But kiss me and I might drop dead.” A quick drum cues the next verse, where she starts to fantasize more, wanting to actually get to know him, understand where he’s been, and eventually turn this into something real she can show off to the world. The bridge shifts everything, bringing up a “Pisces and a Gemini,” which now feels much more direct. Olivia is a Pisces while Louis Partridge is a Gemini, making the line feel less like a comparison between multiple people and more like her genuinely convincing herself that this relationship could work despite their differences. Instead of sounding conflicted, the moment almost comes across hopeful, like she is fully leaning into the excitement and possibility of this connection before everything eventually unraveled later on.
