Alexa Cappelli is this week’s Under 1M Spotlight! Alexa pulling in an impressive 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and she is absolutely making her way in pop right now. Her sound feels like a mix of young it girls like Tate McRae, a little Ariana Grande, and a sprinkle of Zara Larsson all wrapped together into something new and fresh. Alexa has already released a deluxe album called The Process of Elimination, which I definitely encourage everyone to check out if you want to fully dive into her sound. Today though, we’re taking a closer look at her newest single, “Oblivious,” which is actually how I first discovered her.
The track opens with twinkly synthy notes floating in the background before Alexa immediately pulls us into the story. She paints this picture of being completely fascinated by a guy while simultaneously spiraling over whether he feels the same way about her. She communicates that perfectly through the line about “forgetting where her brain is,” instantly tapping into that super relatable feeling of having a crush consume your thoughts. It captures the excitement and confusion that comes with the beginning of something new and enticing.
The pre-chorus builds on that uncertainty before throwing us right into a classic catchy chorus where Alexa basically curses her own feelings. Repeating over and over, “My friends say he’s in love / But I’m oblivious,” really packs in the main point of the song: she is just so confused about what feelings to trust. She sings about their time that they spend together while explaining that all of her friends insist he is obviously into her, but she still cannot fully believe it herself. Even with all the confusion though, one thing is crystal clear: she is completely attracted to him, and honestly, that alone drives the entire energy of the song.
Production-wise, the dancy trap-inspired beat makes the track easy to get into. There’s a simplicity to the song that works in its favor because it makes the emotions feel relatable to young girls. Girl meets boy. Girl gets confused. Boy is irresistible. And of course, friends are there hyping the entire thing up along the way. The track really just fully encapsulates young fun while perfectly capturing the chaos of being a professional overthinker. Go stream Alexa Cappelli today!
