hate that i made you love me – Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande has been quite busy these past few years and we have yet another album coming this July! This girl can do it all. Since her iconic release of thank u, next in 2019 and her break, Ariana has come back strong, releasing 2 studio albums, 3 deluxes, 3 tenth anniversary edition albums, and a two part soundtrack for the sensational Wicked as well as Wicked: For Good. What can’t she do? Nothing! Here she comes again with her new single “hate that i made you love me” and her upcoming album petal.

“Hate that i made you love me” was released last Friday and we are here to take a deep dive. The song opens with the sounds of popping bubbles accompanied by a suspicious drum beat. Ariana has grown up. She seems more mature and calm when she talks about relationships. She says “turned tears into diamonds, got good at goodbyes,” showing us that things that must have been hard before aren’t so difficult anymore. She seems unapologetic for who she is and is telling past relationships that she has found herself. She casts this person that was in love with her to the side because she admits she barely gave it attention to begin with.

The second verse gives us the impression that this person used her. She is disappointed that a person like this loved her because she did not want anything to do with it. The bridge calls this person insecure and misogynistic, and she wants to emphasize that this was not her fault and she was merely just existing. The chorus comes back even stronger in the outro, filled with touches of vocal intricacy. An abrupt ending leaves us wondering: what else is in store for petal?
